A moated castle in Windischleuba near Altenburg (East Thuringia) was built around 925 to secure the crossing to the nearby Pleiße river and access to the town of Altenburg. It changed hands several times, stood empty for around 150 years, fell into disrepair and was only rebuilt according to the old forms by the von Münchhausens, a noble family until 1886.
