@dsfgs @mangeurdenuage Zoning (which is typical in the US) has turned out to be a really bad idea, which is part of the same problem. They force residents into a residential-only zone with no shops, then assume they can drive a car to reach shops. The first step is to reverse the zoning laws.

@koherecoWatchdog
They assume that the #shops are zoned where they need to be and in some cases they are correct but its also important not to stifle innovation in #residentialZones, especially innovation that clearly grows organically.

In residential zones there can be valid noise, lighting, and pollution concerns.

@dsfgs @mangeurdenuage Indeed certain kinds of industry should be distanced from residential areas, but certainly not grocery stores, restaurants, libraries, things that are not disruptive. Most US cities seem to ban most commerce from residential areas.
@mangeurdenuage @dsfgs In European cities you step out your front door and getting groceries is often short walk because grocery stores are not banned from residential areas. This also means you don't need a car which puts Europe ahead of the US on climate action.
@koherecoWatchdog @mangeurdenuage @dsfgs Yes, a lot of the problem in the US is zoning, not density. American suburbs are surprisingly dense; maybe not dense enough to be truly walkable, but if shops could be spread throughout the residential sections and the appropriate infrastructure was added huge swaths of suburban America would be very bikeable. Forget the environment; just the benefits for children, youths, the poor, and anyone who could use some exercise make it worthwhile!

@adamasnemesis
Its really true the #supermarkets and #shoppingCentres are almost fitted out to be as ornate and decorative as medieval #churches.

Re: walkable we have had some very characterful old buildings and trees that made our built environment walkable from an aesthetic and restorative viewpoint but they were sacrificed for drab, blocky designs with no character and we don't enjoy walking in that area.
