you know, this is not panorama news. this stunning, full-grown idiocy is the reality we have to live/survive in:
Moet Hennessy's Russia office warned local partners it was suspending supplies after Russian lawmakers adopted legislation stipulating that the word "champagne" can only be applied to wine produced in Russia, while the world-famous tipple from France's Champagne region should be called "sparkling wine".

"the word "champagne" can only be applied to wine produced in Russia"... erm... I don't even have a civil word for this, really.
the level of progressive marasmus that has totally seized their feeble minds is just unspeakable. the degree of absurdity of laws in this country is increasing with every day. this is absolutely sick.

Not exactly same situation (there is some compensation at least), but it happens in other countries too – "Armenian 'Cognac' Off The Shelf As EU Pledges $3.5 Million To Drop The Name" https://www.rferl.org/a/armenian-brandy-cognac/31314620.html
Armenian 'Cognac' Off The Shelf As EU Pledges $3.5 Million To Drop The Name

Armenian brandy producers say they're unsure exactly how to market their award-winning spirits that are known to most consumers as “cognac” as an EU agreement banning use of that word comes into force.

@keereel but this is the right demand: cognac is only French tipple, the rest are brandy, and in Russia it's often just a colored spirit, as a fact :)
but Champagne is a French region and champagne is historically made there. there's no such thing as "Russian champagne", because it's just a soda pop, not even a naturally sparkling wine. some sparkling wines are also produced in Italy, as far as I know. but never were made on the territory of the former USSR.
