I want to explore few #selfhost applications with #yonoHost

Suggest low cost VPS providers.

#DigitalOcean gets u $50 for 30 days upon usd 5 payment.

You be good with this option.

Vultr.com cost 2.5$ per month.

Ovh.com offers cheap unmanaged vps

@tshrinivasan

These are low cost price from good service provider.

Though, we may need better resource to run a few Web app along Yunohost packages.

I've used YunoHost on DigitalOcean for nealy an year.

@tshrinivasan

@noorul Thanks.

What is your server capacity on digitalocean?

what are the services you run on #yonohost?

Basically, I run #YunoHost for mail suite, Webmail

And pleroma too.

Other Web app can be installed and managed separately.

@tshrinivasan

@noorul mail ?

Good.

What is your email address that you host?

How do you manage with getting spams?

Mail suite has number of application to run.

It has spam filter to work.

The real problem is to set up necessary dns records to ful functional mail server.

Sometimes, headache to get all working at first

@tshrinivasan

@noorul what is the mailsuite application name that comes with #yonohost?

full email stack (Postfix, Dovecot, Rspamd, DKIM)

@tshrinivasan

@noorul okey. I know the pains of maintaining them.

I faced hurdle at initial set up and not really look into maintaining, except backing up mail directory

@tshrinivasan

I went on setting up mail suit individually, but it wasn't worth my effort for less than 200 mail accounts totally.

@tshrinivasan

Actually, don't be concern of these underlying app with Yunohost.

The beauty of Yunohost is prebuilt.

Once you installed and initiated, Yunohost, you will be busy with other parts to get start function.

Usually, other third party mail provider will not receive mails from our server demanding certain DKIM etc.

Also Gmail/Yahoo may flag our IP as spam too.

You have to work on these to ensure all working before digging under lying parts.

@tshrinivasan

@noorul ok.

I dont invest time on email for now.

May be will host a mastodon or writefreely or some photo sharing app.

I miss flick's free account a lot.

Lost interest after they moved to paid model.

Will try any photo sharing app.

Strong recommendation : pixelfed.

You can start on of these instance, fedigram.com & pixfed.com

I am co admin there

@tshrinivasan

@noorul I am looking for photo albums, not for individual photos like pixelfed.

When I goto events, I capture many photos and like to publish them as photo albums.

missing picasa web albums and flickr albums.

The google photos is not listing all my public albums.

I am minimalist.

My preference is static page.

It is better to go with static page template or static page generator for photo gallery hosting.

This is faster than web app and very customise look.

Though, you lose web app function.

@tshrinivasan

😬

Welcome to self hosting and forget about Google, Picasa, Flickr.

@tshrinivasan

😊

Own mail server is real pain but with yunohost, half of the struggle taken care.

But that period setting up was real lesson.

I was amazed how many moving parts for mail server which we take for grand.

@tshrinivasan

@noorul yes. By self hosting only we can learn the real power of free/Open source software.

I use #zimbra mail server for few clients.

Installed long back and they are running smoothly for years.
