Groan worthy pun of the year award to Aldi supermarket for this slogan on their bags-for-life:

"O flour of Scotland..."

"Flower of Scotland" is Scotland's national anthem.

The song was written by Roy Williamson of The Corries, sometime in the mid-1960s. This version of the song is quite different from the more rousing versions performed by the group in later years. Video quality is poor, and there is an abrupt ending, but the different style is fascinating:

@fitheach I'm neutral on indy (I don't think it's as important either way as most folks think) but Flower of Scotland becoming the actual national anthem of an independent Scotland might just sway me against. That said, my choice would be I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles), mainly because you can be sure everybody already knows the words, but I know it would be a divisive choice too ....

@Oberon
I've met Roy Williamson and Ronnie Browne several times, after concerts. Sadly, of course, Roy is no longer with us. They were both talented musicians and really nice guys. When they played FoS, it was always something really special. So, I have a real soft spot for the song.

I also love 500 Miles, and likewise, I've met Craig & Charlie several times. However, it is a love song, rather than an anthem. Though it is a rousing tune.

@fitheach An interesting study in how a song can affect people different ways! You've met some interesting people :D Looking on to my own reaction to Flower of Scotland, I realise I'm objecting to militarism and the more misty-eyed side of nationalism. In which case, I might as well just say that I don't like national anthems ....
@fitheach (It also goes almost without saying that still I vastly prefer Flower of Scotland to God Save The Queen, in both tune and sentiment).
