You don't really own your #Xiaomi devices. You have to take permission from the company and have to wait for several days to unlock your device. And I thought Facebook account deletion was bad.

If Xiaomi is going to unlock my phone and not me, I can be sure that they are going to put backdoors and malware into the phone.

Some people had to wait for 1440 hours!

Meanwhile #Huawei doesn't even permit unlocking the bootloader.

As you said, others are even worse, no official unlock option. I'm currently trying to unlock Redmi Note 6 Pro. No success yet. Only resurrection remix available, no lineage. The situation is getting worse by the day as lineage support is only for old devices. I'm waiting for #Libem 5 from Purism to dump #android for good.

@praveen

Theres a new wave of AOSP based operating systems that focus heavily on privacy and security. They support recent devices - so far only Pixels, but look set to also support some Android One devices

#CalyxOS is working on support for the Mi A2, theres code in their repository

There is also #HashbangOS #GrapheneOS #RattlesnakeOS

Turning on OEM unlock option was tricky. Now they want me to wait 337 hours to unlock.

Finally unlocked Redmi Note 6 Pro after 16 days.

And flashed Resurrection Remix on it. This was a long and tedious process, many times things did not work as expected. To flash a recovery image, we had to try different USB ports, cables and laptops... Missed flashing firmware before the OS... Unlock failed with an error message in Chinese... But with all this, I think Xiomi is the only option in Indian market in affordable range.

@praveen I have been waiting since April 29. Looks like I have 72 hours more to go.
This is the first and last Xiaomi phone I'll buy.

Bought a Motorola recently though Xiaomi sells a phone of the same config for INR 5k less. I can't jump through their arbitrary hoops anymore.

@njoseph
Cool, do they support unlocking easily? How about official ROMs? I'm waiting for Librem 5 by Purism which going to come with GNOME by default and 100% Free Software (with Respect Your Freedom certification from FSF expected). Currently the price is a bit high, but if there is demand, I think price will come down.
@praveen I was able to instantly unlock a Moto G3 a year go. Didn't try any of the newer ones yet.
I have a Moto G6 which I can try unlocking. Will let you know if I succeed.
@njoseph
The problem with newer models is lack of official support for LineageOS. This is the reason we settled for Xiomi even though we knew the unlocking is crap.
