Right now, there is an internet shut down (filters and geo-blockers likely being the force) being put in place in Zimbabwe because the gov't said so, and it will last 3 days.

Some of the work I did in Uganda focused on training and teaching HRDs how to get around these acts of suppression by the gov't and sometimes even still it's not enough.

One of the tools we teach folks about is OONI (a tor project) that will tell us if the internet is REALLY down (often it isn't, often it's blocking) and coupled with that we explain VPNs and how they can help and also the safety they can provide.
and still sometimes it isn't enough. There's a h/t dedicated to situations like this,
#keepiton and #switchitbackon often with the country code added, so this would be #keepitonze or #switchitbackonze
@_whitni a friend was recently back home in the DRC for the election and theirs was shut off for 3 days too... He wasn't able to get around it so we all kind of had to trust he'd be home when he said he would
