I am from Baraboo, that town with the viral photo of high school students doing the nazi salute in a prom photo.

Yeah.

The response from the community has been mixed. A lot of folks really missing the point. There’s this event happening that’s.... better than nothing, I guess. https://madison.com/ct/news/local/govt-and-politics/baraboo-addresses-viral-nazi-salute-photo-with-all-day-assembly/article_3004f021-cf07-565e-b3fc-60e6b608f4ed.html

@rhea_ewing
The writer and comic artist in me desperately wants to go to this event and document the unique opportunity of “my town got famous for nazis and this was the response” ...like, I might never forgive myself if I don’t go and take notes.
On the other hand, I’m not sure how much more nazi apologist bs I can hear over this photo. I’ve had people tell me it’s just a PR problem, they didn’t mean it, baraboo is the most welcoming place (it isn’t), and that really the people who have set us back are these reporters (and people like me) who are making such a fuss.
@rhea_ewing I’ve had one acquaintance make *constant* passive aggressive and gas lighting remarks at me every time I interact with her, ever since I dared to say that “yeah, Baraboo didn’t treat me well when I lived there and I’m not totally surprised this happened.”

All that said, I’m writing a damn book about living in small town America as a trans and queer nonchristian person I SHOULD PROBABLY KNOW WHATS UP.

Alright, barring a sudden absence of spoons I’ll be there.
