My two (enormous) stories about how companies turn you and your data into cash, and how to stop them, are both out today! You can read them for free!

Happy that I was able to work in shout-outs to #Mastodon and @pixelfed

How Companies Turn Your Data Into Money

Companies collect our personal data online and use it to target us with ads, among other purposes. And while that's not a new phenomenon, you still might be surprised at how much they know about you. Here's how to find out.

@maxeddy

The irony is not lost on me that all the popup notification requests, desire to access my mobile microphone and camera, and cookie warnings on this site crashed my browser before I could read your article.

@pixelfed

@RussSharek @maxeddy Constant reflows from ads being loaded async made me quit reading the article on my phone out of frustration.

@trwnh

Agreed. What's particularly shocking is that this site exhibits what is now considered 'normal' behavior by mainstream users.

@maxeddy

@RussSharek @trwnh I am truly sorry for the bad experience. Using Pocket or a browser's Reading Mode should alleviate the issues, but I totally understand the frustration.

@maxeddy

It's not your site, so it really isn't on you

@trwnh

@RussSharek @maxeddy @trwnh Maybe set up an independent blog that doesn't have that kind of adware
@maxeddy
Congrats! This must have been lots of working hours...
@pixelfed
@geschnattere @pixelfed Thank you! The interviews started in February and there were more than a few times were I wasn't certain it would see the light of day.
@maxeddy Thank you for the shout-out!
@maxeddy @pixelfed Good stuff. Really great reading.
