Why do all the cool #bitcoin people seem to hang out on mastodon.social. Is that instance extra fantastic somehow?
@kalle I think it's simply because that was one of the oldest or first nodes and people typically sign up on the same node as their friends
@kalle I think they just clicked a link to someone else who already had an account here and then created their own in the least-effort way. I'm sure we'll see instance diversification over time.
@harding yeah. Unfortunately your choice of instance is pretty important. I don't think new users (including me a year ago) realize that you can't easily switch instance. Ultimately you'll run your own instance, though.

@kalle You can export/import all the people you follow, which is probably the most important thing, and then you can just periodically toot from your old account to nag everyone who still likes you to follow your new account. I think you can also export your toot history (if not, your admin may be able to give you a dump).

That's certainly not idea, but I don't think it's too bad.

@harding Right. That's some comfort, at least. Thanks.
@kalle could be, but mamot.fr is fantasticer!
@kalle there are a few bitcoiners looking to set up their own instances. I think it was just the path of least resistance to try this out.
