Zhong Yi Optics Launches the Mitakon Speedmaster 90mm f/1.5 Lens

Zhong Yi Optics has announced the Mitakon Speedmaster 90mm f/1.5 manual focus portrait lens for full-frame Leica M, Canon RF, Sony FE, and Nikon Z mounts.

The company says its new portrait prime provides a medium telephoto angle of view, great control of depth of field, and the ability to render distortion-free portraits with well-controlled color artifacts. Zhong Yi Optics also says that the Leica M mount version can autofocus with third-party adapters such as the ones from Techart or Megadap. These adapters allow Nikon Z and Sony users to take advantage of the short flange distance of the Leica M mount and gain autofocus with the 90mm f/1.5 that supports face and eye detection as well as work in tandem with the camera's in-body image stabilization.

The lens is constructed of nine elements in six groups, two of which are extra-low dispersion elements and two more are low dispersion, high refraction elements. The company says this formula creates outstanding image quality with limited color fringing and chromatic aberration. Zhong Yi also says that the color rendition from the lens is "vividly close" to what the human eye sees.

The lens is classified as apochromatic (APO) and as such the company claims that bright to dark transitions in a photo (and especially highlights) are reproduced almost completely free of color artifacting. Axial chromatic aberrations are corrected with elements of special glass with anomalous partial dispersion, and Zhong Yi says the result are chromatic aberrations that are too minimal to see.

It describes the 90mm f/1.5 as capable of creating a "dreamlike" ambiance in images thanks to its "buttery" bokeh at maximum aperture thanks to a mixture of its optics, the focal length, and the nine-bladed rounded iris design.

Thanks to the super-fast f/1.5 wide-open aperture, Zhong Yi says that the 90mm lens excels in low-light environments. The company claims it can replicate light sources consistently over the entire frame while also suppressing coma flare.

Below are a set of sample images captured with the lens and provided by Zhong Yi Optics:

The Mitakon Speedmaster 90mm f/1.5 is available directly from Zhong Yi Optics for $599 for Canon RF, Nikon Z, and Sony E mounts and $649 for Leica M mount.

The ZY Optics Lens Turbo 2 is a 0.72x speed booster for M42, EF and F mount lenses on Nikon Z bodies - DIY Photography

ZY Optics has announced its new Zhongyi Lens Turbo II. It’s a 0.72x speed booster for Nikon Z mount APS-C cameras. There are three versions available that let you use full-frame M42, Canon EF and Nikon F mount lenses on the new system with a wider field of view than you’d otherwise get on an […]

New Nikon Z Adapter Widens Angle of Full-Frame Lenses on APS-C

Zhong Yi Optics has announced the Mitakon Turbo Adapter II for Nikon Z-mount, which takes M42, Canon EF, or Nikon F-mount full-frame lenses and adapts them for use on Nikon Z APS-C cameras and widens the angle of view to more closely mimic their focal length on full-frame bodies.

Zhong Yi says that the adapter reduces the focal length of lenses by a factor of 0.726x and adds one stop on the lens's aperture range on Nikon Z APS-C cameras.

The adapter allows the use of M42 screw-mount, Canon EF, or Nikon F-mount full-frame lenses on Nikon APC-C cameras, such as the Nikon Z50 or Zfc, but contains optical elements that are designed to make the original focal lengths of those lenses operate similarly on the smaller crop sensor. Technically a focal length reducer, it allows camera bodies with smaller sensors to make use of the full image circle of lenses that were originally designed for full-frame sensors. Zhong Yi adds that this also has the added benefit of providing an increase of light gathering ability to the APS-C camera.

Zhong Yi says that the crop factor of Nikon Z APS-C cameras is 1.52x, but the company says that with the Turbo Adapter, this can be almost entirely offset. If, for example, a photographer wants to use a M42, Canon EF, or Nikon F-mount 15mm lens on a Zfc, that lens has a 22.8mm lens equivalent on the body after the crop factor (notwithstanding the adaptation of the mount). When using Zhong Yi's Turbo Adapter, that angle is reduced to 16.5mm which makes it very similar to the angle of view should the lens have been used on a full-frame body.

Zhong Yi says that the adapter preserves the image quality of the original lens by using four elements in the adapter including one extra-low dispersion element. The barrel of the adapter is metal and weighs 233 grams. The company says that compared to the other turbo adapters for other mounts, the lens release tab in the Nikon Z version has been improved as well and is more robust. As a note, there are no electronic contacts in the adapter, though it does have an aperture control ring built into the adapter to allow for aperture adjustment.

The Mitakon Lens Turbo Adapter II is available for M42, Canon EF, or Nikon F-mount for $149.

Zhong Yi Optics Launches the Mitakon Creator 135mm f/2.5 APO Lens

Chinese lens manufacturer ZY Optics has announced the Mitakon Creator 135mm f/2.5 APO Portrait Lens, a $299 manual-focus telephoto prime for DSLRs and mirrorless cameras.

The company says this updated manual focus lens was made with portrait photographers in mind and is a faster, revised version of the [Creator 135mm f/2.8](https://www.adorama.com/mtk13528v2nm.html?kbid=67085” rel=“norewrite sponsored”) and is available for DSLR and mirrorless systems in the Canon EF, Canon RF, Nikon F, Nikon Z, and Sony FE mounts.

The lens is constructed of nine elements in seven groups and includes two super extra-low dispersion (ED) glass and two ultra-high refraction index glass elements to provide what ZY Optics describes as an ultra-sharp experience with no vignetting and no distracting color fringing in the highlights. The company also says this design allows for "buttery smooth bokeh" when shot wide open and can provide precise separation of the subject from the background.

The 1.86 pounds (845 gram) Mitakon Creator 135mm measures 79mm by 137mm (3.11-inches by 5.39-inches), has a 67mm filter size, and features an internal focus design that ensures there is no extension or retraction on the lens housing when adjusting the focus ring. This will allow filters and accessories to mount on it safely and securely, and provide a very minimal focus breathing when transitioning focus zones.

The new portrait lens features an aperture range of f/2.5 to f/22, has an angle of view of 18.2 degrees with a minimum focus distance of one meter (39.4-inches). It also features a clear scale marking on the aperture and focus rings allowing for precise control when focus throwing, and features what ZY Optics refers to as a "longer than normal" retractable lens hood to assist in reducing lens flare and ghosting.

It seems the company also intends for this lens to be used for more than just portraits since the aperture and focus rings are grooved to allow pulling motors used for video production to fit easily. This manual lens could therefore prove to be a useful and affordable tool for videographers who want to achieve tightly framed shots in low-light situations.

Below are several sample photos that were taken with the new lens and provided courtesy of ZY Optics.

The new Mitakon Creator 135mm f/2.5 APO portrait lens is available now for just $299 from the Zhong Yi Optics website.

ZY Optics Launches its 50mm f/0.95 Speedmaster for L-Mount

Zhong Yi (ZY) Optics has announced that the mirrorless Mitakon Speedmaster 50mm f/0.95 lens originally launched for Sony E-mount, Canon RF-mount, and Nikon Z-mount (and later came to Leica M-mount) is now available for Leica L-mount. It is the first-ever f/0.95 lens that has been produced for L-mount.

The design of ZY Optics' 50mm f/0.95 was originally announced in 2019 and features 11 elements in eight groups and includes two extra-low dispersion elements to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberration as well as one ultra-high refraction element near the rear of the lens. The company included both an MTF chart and a diagram of the optical construction which can be seen below:

As noted in the original launch, ZY Optics says that the lens gives photographers "excellent control" over the depth of field and provides an "enchanting and dreamy" image thanks to its shallow depth of field. The bokeh is promised to be perfectly round thanks to the nine-bladed aperture. The lens also uses the common 67mm filter thread size.

The Mitakon Speedmaster 50mm f/0.95 has what the company describes as a "premium" build, with an all-metal housing that ZY Optics claims is highly durable.

"A solid feel of precision in hand is given by an evenly scaled aperture control ring and clear markings on the lenses’ bodies," the company writes.

That extremely fast aperture of f/0.95 is ideal for subject isolation, but also for low light photography.

"For any low light and night environment, our ultra-wide aperture is the best match for your shooting. Mitakon Speedmaster 50mm f/0.95 can reproduce light source consistently over the entire frame, without the presence of spiky coma flare," ZY Optics says. "The f/0.95 fast aperture also excels in night photography. Photographers can capture charming moments at night with ease with the Mitakon Speedmaster."

The company also touts the lens as ideal for videography, and says that filmmakers will find its de-clicked aperture allows for smooth transitions of exposure control. ZY Optics also says that its close-to-460-degree long focus throw allows a high level of precision in the adjustment of the focus point.

The Zhong Yi Optics Mitakon Speedmaster 50mm f/0.95 for L-mount is available now directly from the company's website for $800.
