taking a quick break from data collection to offer two unsolicited fic recs! these fics are about two different drama adaptations of danmei novels by priest, and i read them years apart, but one strongly reminded me of the other and both made me cry.

both are post-canon fics about a character who expected his life to be one long string of tragedies now navigating the happy ending he's accidentally found himself in.

also, both feature a husband who's on a work trip and a visit to the in-laws. (i really do think the second fic must have been inspired by the first.)

Zhu Yilong (Shen Wei)'s acting in this episode is off the charts, the raw emotions when he realizes he can't escape Zhao Yunlan finally knowing he's the Black Robed Envoy was just mindblowing!

The realization immediately dawning on him, basically seeing his life crumble in front of his eyes as the fear of losing Zhao Yunlan overtakes him, trying to regain his composure and come up with an excuse but failing, and also his heartbreak when he hears ZYL say "I thought we were friends"...

All of this done with such subtle changes in his expression and without uttering a single word?

I wasn't expecting Zhao Yunlan to be so in love with Shen Wei already 🤣

Buying expensive old books just to approach him? "I feel so happy when we work together"? Falling asleep on his shoulder?

Meanwhile Shen Wei being like "I have lost my loved one once, I will not suffer from it twice"?? Loved one singular? And all his flashbacks are with Zhao Yunlan?

And then Shen Wei taking such good care of Zhao Yunlan when he's sick, and Zhao Yunlan saying in response to this "Shen Wei, you're so nice, I won't let you walk away"???

I thought The Untamed was pretty obvious, but this is so much more 🤣 Good stuff! This episode was everything!

About an online writer getting caught up by the monsters he writes, basically. And of course this show is based off of an online novel!

I had been suspecting it since ep 2, but I'm bad at recognizing faces so it was hard to tell with the mask.

I thought the revelation would come much later tbh, the suspense didn't last long 😅

I really love this show so far!

It's fun to make theories, and I love to learn more about the characters and the world they live in.

Unfortunately the 5th episode on YouTube had disynchronized video / sounds / subtitles so it was a bit rough to follow but hopefully that won't happen too often (ep 1 was like this too, but it was free for streaming on Youku's platform so that's where I watched it)
