Electric car prices slashed as UK grant unlocks £3,750 discounts for drivers

Drivers in Swansea and across the UK can now save up to £3,750 on new electric vehicles (EVs) under the Electric Car Grant (ECG), which launched in July and is already delivering discounts on popular models from Citroën, Nissan, Renault and Vauxhall.

The scheme is part of the Government’s wider £4.5 billion Plan for Change, aimed at making EVs more affordable, supporting British jobs, and helping meet the UK’s 2030 deadline to phase out new petrol and diesel car sales.

£1,500 discounts now live — £3,750 coming soon

Seventeen models have already qualified for the lower £1,500 grant band, with more expected to reach the full £3,750 threshold in the coming weeks. Discounts are applied automatically at the point of sale, with no paperwork required from customers.

To qualify, vehicles must:

  • Be fully electric and zero-emission
  • Cost £37,000 or less
  • Meet strict sustainability standards, including verified Science Based Targets
  • Offer a minimum 100-mile range and warranty of at least 3 years (battery warranty must be 8 years)

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said: “This EV grant will not only allow people to keep more of their hard-earned money — it’ll help our automotive sector seize one of the biggest opportunities of the 21st century. We’re backing British drivers, British jobs and British growth.”

Industry reaction and local impact

Manufacturers and motoring groups have welcomed the scheme, which is expected to boost private EV sales and narrow the cost gap between electric and petrol vehicles.

James Taylor, Managing Director of Nissan Motor GB, said: “Nissan has always been an electric vehicle pioneer and this announcement is an exciting step in the UK’s electrification journey.”

Steve Catlin, Managing Director of Vauxhall, added: “We welcome the support of the Electric Car Grant for every electric model in the Vauxhall line-up — including those manufactured here at our Ellesmere Port plant.”

Adam Wood, Managing Director of Renault UK, said: “The availability of the ECG across our entire electric car range has potential to significantly accelerate EV adoption.”

Simon Williams, Head of Policy at the RAC, said: “Drivers now have a wider choice of better-value vehicles than ever before. This can only help speed up the transition to electric motoring.”

Charging infrastructure and long-term goals

The grant scheme is backed by wider investment in EV infrastructure, including:

  • Over 82,000 public chargepoints nationwide
  • A £63 million package to support home and depot charging
  • £1.6 billion to tackle potholes and freeze fuel duty until spring 2026

Funding for the Electric Car Grant is available until the end of the 2028–29 financial year. Under the Government’s Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Mandate, at least 28% of new car sales in 2025 must be electric.

YES. Imagine regular, frequent, on-time electric, zero emission trains Winnipeg to Saskatoon to Edmonton to Calgary to Kelowna to Vancouver to etc etc. Not sharing rails w Freight. No security linups. No wing de-icing. No holding patterns. No Fuss. No lost baggage. No turbulence. Less noise. No batteries. True #ZeroEmissionVehicle. Civilised countries already have this. Canada is #Not. #Yet. #There.
