“Truly Canadian” department store chain Zellers opened their first store in 12 years in Edmonton today, marking a return of the brand. Zellers shut their doors in 2013, with Target buying most of their real estate in their attempt to move into the Canadian market.
Target failed miserably at their attempt to enter Canada, and left the country less than two years later.
Hudson’s Bay opened a few Zellers pop up locations in their stores a couple of years ago, but the brand was sold to another company. The new Zellers in Edmonton is 60,000 square feet.
I shopped at Zellers quite a few times back in the day, and always found their stores to be comfortably familiar, reminiscent of Ames, Kmart, and Hills here in the United States. While these brands have no hope of returning to the states, I’m delighted to see Zellers making a comeback for our friends up north.

The "new" retailer will take over much smaller spaces and be stocked with men’s, women’s and kids’ apparel, as well as home goods, luggage and seasonal items, but ditch other Zellers categories like toys and pharmaceuticals.
