Zeitkapsl, the Austrian end-to-end encrypted photo backup service with servers in Europe, now fully supports Live Photo from iPhone and Motion Photo from Android. Previously they were saved as static images only.

Our storage and compute costs just went up ~35%.

We could pass that on. Instead, we’re taking a harder route:
Inhousing our storage layer
Adding a 3rd replication region
Gradually replacing Hetzner and Backblaze S3

Only once everything is tested, including disaster recovery, we will switch production traffic.

Best case: No price increase, stronger #resilience and faster uploads 🤞

Today is again #did digital indipendence day.

Perfect opportunity to find a #europeanalternative to #googlephotos or #icloud and migrate your data somewhere safe.

We personally would never settle for something less than #e2ee, full native apps on android/ios and easy sharing with friends/family in original quality.

@zeitkapsl remember if you don't have the encryption key (which is the case with most platforms lying to you with end-to-end encryption bs,) you're not safe. Happy to see #zeitkapsl are doing it right.

#Zeitkapsl offers an #EU-hosted alternative to photo storage services tied to #US-based corporations. It provides various native installers for multiple #Linux distributions, as well as #Windows and #macOS, who we must acknowledge now are companies with questionable practices when it comes to user privacy and data and their tightening relationship with a domestic fascist regime.

One comment: the choice of stock images is disappointingly lacking diversity and for me personally off-putting.
