MTV: Streaming killed the Video Star Forty years. Forty years! That’s longer than most Tik Tok trends, longer than the lifespan of a goldfish named Kevin, and significantly longer than the attention span required to watch a full music video in 2025. MTV launched in 1981 with a simple, revolutionary premise: ”I want my MTV!” Meaning: Please, for the love of god, show us music videos instead of just hearing songs on the radio! It was visual crack for a generation raised on static and Casey Kasem’s soothing baritone. We got Buggles, we got Duran Duran looking impossibly cool on yachts, we got Madonna writhing on wedding cakes, and we got Michael Jackson moonwalking into our collective consciousness. It was glorious, chaotic, and loud.
