The Welsh church claimed by spiders and ivy: what do Britain’s derelict churches say about our health and happiness?

The series on abandoned buildings on St Tyfrydog’s church in Llandyfrydog on Ynys Môn, aka Anglesey, which has now been rescued by Friends of Friendless Churches, a charity that rescues and protects historic places of worship in England and Wales.

I have been an atheist since the age of 10, but feel that churches are important buildings on these islands, and have been to see gigs in them, including the trumpet and drums duo the Spaceheads. As Rachel Morley, director of the charity, who was brought up Catholic but is not religious, puts it:

“I just love that they are there, they belong to the landscape and the nation. Anyone can go in, for spiritual succour, or if you’ve been on a walk and you want to sit down and eat your lunch.”

“Conservation isn’t just about animals. Protecting plants like shore dock is essential to restoring whole ecosystems.

“We’re proud to support a project like Natur am Byth!, without which these plants would not be able to establish in the wild.”

Globally threatened Shore Dock given new hope in north Wales

One of the UK’s rarest coastal plants is being brought back from the brink thanks to a major conservation partnership working to restore its fragile habitat in north Wales. Fewer than 5,000 Shore Dock plants remain in the wild worldwide, but conservationists are working to secure its future at Newborough on Ynys Môn, one of […]

We spent our final evening at our favourite Indian restaurant at #FourCrosses on #YnysMón.

Always a lovely welcome and great food.

Amazing waves around the #YnysCybi coastline today.

Fabulous #pizzas at the #PantonArms in #Pentraeth on #YnysMôn.

Happy Thursday.
It's rather blustery across #YnysMôn today.

We went to #Beaumaris past night for a meal, which was a nice treat.

The castle was looking resplendent too.

We are going to the #eternalshame of #SuePerkins at #VenueCymru in #Llandudno later on.

We can't believe that we have already been living (albeit temporarily) up on #YnysMôn.

One of the many benefits of being here is coming to experience the changing seasons and how these play out in nature and also at special places such as Bodnant.

The true #legacy of the pioneering though questionale activities of plant hunters is that we now get to experience some fabulous plants in their prime.

Bodnant is renowned for its camellias and #red #rhododendron species & hybrids that just glow.
