@AmeliasBrain @HyL

Thank you for the #intel!

The decorative lampposts sound lovely, but yeah, not helpful for the problems of heat and #asphalt.

The thing is, that even in advance of #HeatDomes and serial #heatwaves neighbourhoods like mine are unwalkable in the summer from heat alone.

In the winter, the sloped sidewalk concrete that almost-seamlessly joins the asphalt roadway AND lack of routine snow clearance means that street parkers are often parked somewhat on the sidewalk itself.

This is particularly easy to do when the #snowpack on the road is higher than the sidewalk, which is most winters, even ones with relatively little snow.

This narrows the sidewalks to the point that even if cleared, they are not necessarily wide enough to use with #AssistiveDevices such as #rollators and #wheelchairs.

I really want #yegAccessible, year-round!

Please do. ❤️

Esp wrt construction and sidewalks, this nonsense happens ALL the time and it is frankly exhausting to feel as though I am an unremunerated city inspector when I live in the enforced poverty of #AISH.

Allies matter a LOT and you are absolutely right that the area would be impassible, not only for wheelchair users but rollators, many strollers, etc.

@TaiMunro

It's a major reason I use forearm crutches with icepicks on the tips rather than a rollator.

With the crutches and icepicks, I *might* be able to summit a windrow.

With a rollator (and presumably an actual wheelchair, but I don't have one so cannot comment from experience), my journey ends no later than the end of the block. 😡

It's pure crap #UrbanDesign for our winter conditions

And that's assuming everyone between my door and the bus stop clears their sidewalks and also that the city clears the curb cuts.

Which, in over a decade here, the former is spotty at-best and the latter is never.

So, even if the city miraculously did it fit in keeping accessible infrastructure accessible, local residents don't.

I'll stop now … too tired for more specific rantyness today. 😐

Indeed. I had to make a journey to #ualberta this week to drop off books. Now that the Education library (Coutts) is permanently shuttered, the closest is the not-very-accesible-to-get-to Rutherford.

Using my rollator to cross at an unmaintained and deeply broken curbcut, I then had to navigate the crosswalk itself, also missing many cobbles completely making for a dangerous and rough crossing.

We need #yegAccessible now.

We need this sort of thing in Edmonton to be a judgy reminder to others to clear* their damn sidewalks!

Sigh. Here's part of feedback I had to send to Superstore today re grocery delivery:

Last year they didn't put up signs for my neighbourhood (or if yes, did so with mimimal warning). Last year was the first time I didn't move my car in advance.

Coincidentally, last year as the first time my normal 'parking spot' did NOT become the dumping ground for all the snow plowed further up the street.

My take-away was that unlike prior years, I can better preserve my accessibility by ignoring future postings. 😳😬🙄

Maybe I'm just not all that clever, but for the life of me, I can't imagine how making a live-update map showing City of Edmonton plows (almost) never clearing my neighbourhood is going to make any difference??? 🤔

Edmonton adopts new snow-clearing tactics after last winter's bumps | CBC News

After shovelling more than $5 million back into its snow and ice clearing budget, the City of Edmonton is promising to better maintain streets and sidewalks during the long, icy season ahead.

@GroguTheGreen

I don't know about now, but when Greyhound was still running, I realised it technically *was* possible to get to the Via/Greyhound station via transit, as long as I took the LRT from Clareview to Century Park, caught the ETS bus to the International Airport by Leduc, then took an airporter minibus back to the train/bus station.

Wtaf??!?
