Composer, multi-instrumentalist, Breton artist Yann Tiersen's work is most often based in post-classical music with a lot of contemporary classical tones. He also brings a strong ambient component into the mix, blurring the genre lines in that regard. His main instrument is the piano, but he is also partial to electronic effects and synths to create a certain mood. His music tends to be on the contemplative and melancholic side, with plenty of romantic themes that flow throughout his catalog. From a stylistic standpoint, he keeps his pieces fairly in line with minimalist sound. Nor surprisingly perhaps, he is also quite active in the original film soundtrack world, having scored the 2001 French movie Amélie, among many others. His earlier work, on the other hand, had more pronounced folk and rock undertones.
