Quasit's Daily Book Recommendations: "The Space Eagle: Operation Star Voyage" (1970) by Jack Pearl

Category: YA, ages 10 to 19 (?)
Genre: Science Fiction, Thriller, Espionage

This is another obscure one, but a fun one. It's a bit like James Bond in space for the young, and it really works well. The storytelling is brisk and exciting.

It's actually the •second• book of two, but I read it long before I found the first book in the series and I still prefer it to the original (although the original's not bad: it's "The Space Eagle: Operation Doomsday" (1967) by Jack Pearl).

Paul Girard is a handsome millionaire playboy, Olympic athlete, and brilliant inventor. But when he's NOT being all those things, he's The Space Eagle: Defender of Truth, Justice, and America.

Okay, there was NO way to say that without sounding totally silly. But in a way, that's the kind of book this is: not silly, but good old-fashioned fun and excitement. Paul wears a secret device in one ear by which he can be reached, night or day, by the President of the United States. And that's where the story starts.

It's a national emergency, of course, and only the Space Eagle can save the world!

[Out of sight among the trees around a small lagoon, Paul knelt down and deftly removed the miniature radio set from his right ear. Then he separated the two halves of the tiny rig, uncovering a microscopic dial, an exact replica of the conventional phone dial. From a small inside pocket in the belt of his swimming trunks, he extracted a jeweler’s magnifying eyepiece and a straight pin. Squinting through the eyepiece, he dialed a special phone number at the White House with the point of the pin.

With the transmitter cupped to his mouth, and the receiver held to his ear, he spoke tersely:

“Space Eagle here—seventy-six sixty.” He gave the identifying call letters, and said, “Mr. President, what’s up? Any trouble?”

“Trouble, big trouble, Paul,” the familiar voice replied. The next words sent an icy chill creeping along Paul’s spine.

“The Russians are on the verge of a breakthrough in their experiments with a matter-antimatter rocket engine. It may take them months. Maybe only weeks—or days, for all we know— but once they get it, they can take over everything, and we won’t be able to lift a finger to stop them!”]

Hokey, but well done. The inventions are just right to capture the imagination of a boy: for example, a special pill and application of a special salve that allows the bone and muscles of the face to be sculpted like clay, creating a foolproof disguise.

(Personally I always wondered how Paul managed to sculpt his face •back• to his original perfect looks, but apparently he's just that good at sculpting.)

I shouldn't give the impression that the Space Eagle works alone. His sister is an equally brilliant scientist, and party to his secret identity. An elderly Russian scientist, and expatriate to the USA, •isn't• party to the secret but helps him nonetheless. And Samuel Aarons, a family friend who helped raise Paul, also becomes part of the Space Eagle team; he's black, bald, tall, and a student of the ancient wisdom of the Orient.

Also a critical part of the team is the S.W.I.F.T., a highly advanced spacecraft kept in orbit to be summoned by remote control as needed. It's a pretty cool craft and the illustrations of it captured my imagination as a boy.

The initial adventure is a stealth mission into Russia, where a deposit of incredibly rare spartanium, the only material which can power a matter-antimatter space drive, has been discovered.

The second adventure involves a trip to Proxima Centauri in the S.W.I.F.T. A test of the worth of mankind is involved by the super-brains who live there, among other high points.

Let's leave it at that. I don't want to spoil it for you!

As far as I know the books were never released as ebooks. They're long out of print. It's very rare to fund one (and I've only ever found hardcover copies, by the way). Luckily the Internet Archive has PDF versions available to borrow freely online:

I wish there'd been a few more sequels, but at least we have these two books to enjoy.

Happy reading! 🤓📖
