Gum on China’s ShoeMy old friend, the 忍字碑 on Xiangshan, above Taipei’s Xinyi District.
忍 / ren means “to persevere” - a very fitting character to encounter carved into a rock up a mountain.
I first met the rock in 1990. I first took this photo in 1994. And now I’ve taken it again, thirty years later, at the end of April.
I’ll see if I can find the 1994 photo. It sat on my desk at work in Australia for many years.

Finding badminton courts tucked into the slopes of the hill was probably what surprised me most. They are not necessarily in the best condition, but still celebrated by the mountain athletes. You usually meet groups of older Taiwanese very very early in the morning.

The mountain gym

Among my favorite places on Xiangshan (next to the lookouts) is this Mountain Gym, a bunch of makeshift weights and steel bars, of course once more "hidden" just some 30 meters behind the "elephant rocks" where most tourists stop their journey. It's usually a crowded place, of an easy-going and encouraging atmosphere. The men and women coming here know each other, and they are not trying to one-up each other in the size of their biceps but to stay healthy. And healthy they are!
