In a scattered idea phase where I build on whatever ideas pop into my head.

Current idea: high magic species that treats schools of magic as gendered and colored. Kids are birthed through magic ritual rather than biology.

They start life as colorless and typically (but not always) transition to one of the primary genders associated with cyan, magenta, and yellow when they come of age. Archmages sometimes "earn" the black gender as wise elders.
