Because of the situation with Shuggah, where the company pushing it decided to charge for code they don't write, the actual devs decided to distance themselves from it, to the point that they no longer offer support for it.

Someone launched a competing app called Shuggo. It appears to be a straight build of xdrip4ios. But for how long?

This is the problem with trying to do something like this. The trust is destroyed.

I'll keep using my build of xdrip4ios.

The more recent reviews of Shuggah on the app store are finally hitting, and the rating has fallen from around 4.5 stars to 3.7.

Sadly, Alty is getting money out of this anyway. They still link to the xdrip4ios Facebook group and there's been at least one report of a user paying for it and noticing the group doesn't support Shuggah anymore.

Alty is creating a great deal of harm, here.

I’m watching some disappointing confusion over the Shuggah situation.

To be clear: The company (Alty) that released Shuggah is not associated with the developers of the code Shuggah is built from (xdrip4ios/xdripswift). Alty does not contribute to xdrip4ios. Alty links to xdrip4ios resources for support. Alty provides zero support for Shuggah.

I know that last part is true because every time I’ve reached out to them, they told me to go to the xdrip4ios facebook group.

The xdrip4ios facebook group has a clear notice that they no longer provide support for Shuggah due to their app now, officially, being a fork.

Let me repeat this: Shuggah is a fork of xdrip4ios. Shuggah is not xdrip4ios. Shuggah contributes nothing back to xdrip4ios.

So when looking at whether xdrip4ios can be built for free or if the TestFlight is free, know that xdrip4ios will never charge for their software.

Honestly, I think xdrip4ios has a case to have Apple take down Shuggah from the app store. But the xdrip4ios devs seem pretty uninterested in any of the app store stuff. Which is why they don’t put in the work to release to the app store and allowed someone else to do it, leading to this situation.

Anyway, I have a private TestFlight of xdrip4ios now.

I have officially switched from Shuggah to xdrip4ios. I wish I could backfill data from nightscout, but meh.

I'll look at getting it in testflight later.

I have confirmed that Shuggah's paywalling of their app is not approved by the xdrip4ios project.

So Alty, publisher of Shuggah, built on the code from the xdrip4ios project, is making a cash grab.

Good times.

The company behind the Shuggah deployment to the app store, and responsible for the paywall, appears to be Alty.

The person behind the xdrip4ios project does not appear to be associated with Alty.

I still can’t find a clear indication the funds will be sent to the open source project.

So I’ve been using Shuggah for a little while now. It’s a build of the open source project xdrip4ios being made available on the app store.

The builders of Shuggah have paywalled core functionality.

I don’t know how the builders of Shuggah are associated with the xdrip4ios project. I don’t know how these funds will be used to benefit xdrip4ios.

I plan to dig into this a bit. They’ve disabled access to the realtime graph and the live activities. It looks like it’s still transmitting to Nightscout though.

In the meantime I guess I need to look into building xdrip4ios on my own.

I don’t mind funding the open source project. I need assurance that this paywalling is going to the project and not some cash grab.

We have data!

Stelo collects 5 minute data points every 15 minutes from the sensor. It appears Shuggah stays with 5 minute collection, like the G7.

The next question: Does Shuggah get values outside of the tight window that Stelo supports? I think the highest it will show is 200mg/dl. We shall see!

I'm playing with plugging a Dexcom Stelo into Shuggah again. Since there's no documentation on this support that was added to xdrip4ios/shuggah, I decided to dig into the code to figure out how to make it work.

Shuggah can now see the sensor. But it's stuck in "scanning" and doesn't get data.

I think this might actually be a Stelo limitation.

This is an issue I have not, personally, encountered, but have seen another user encounter, which I was unable to help on. And this is an example of why I can't recommend this app anymore. The other user also refused to register a Facebook account and just decided to use another app.
