Last week in the community:

- Celebrating incredible community leaders at the Muslim Social Services Gala

- Soaking in the sounds of Open Ears festival as percussion ensembles Taktus Duo and TorQ guided us on an hour-long meditative escape

- We had perfect weather to cheer on drag performers, run into friends, and celebrate 30 years of tri-Pride

- Getting a kick out of this little free toy library on Fairview Ave.

Taking a step back to appreciate the big picture. As a member of the Kitchener 2051 community working group, I helped inform the city's upcoming Official Plan that will help us grow to 450,000 people in an inclusive and sustainable way. Every neighbourhood in Kitchener should have housing options for all stages of life, as well as services and jobs close by. Let's get it right and continue to protect our countryside. #Kitchener #WatReg #WRPoli

Thanks, Mark! I've never been alone. A great network of queer folk have been with me at every step of the path, directly and indirectly. More quietly than me, some - visibility was an explicit goal too, for me - but Lyn McGinnis, and Judy Mackenzie, Marjorie Knight, Marcia Smellie, Maedith Radlein, and Dianne Roedding, and Jim Parrott and the late great Randy Farrell, and Ruth Cameron and Teneile Warren and Ann-Marie Beals and Sara Escobar and Amy Smoke and Bangishimo. And others whose names I'll keep more tightly, bc they often experience aggressive policing by our friendly public servants and protectors.

And in recent years a huge swell of dedicated, hardworking changemakers like Acer and other younger activists have made a big impact, to me and to the community directly.

I walked, that they could run.

They run, so the next can fly!

@transworld

My friends and I are going to be taking this up with the mayor and the councillor in question.

This year is an election year in Ontario. We have decided that until the mayor of Cambridge apologises, grandly and publicly, to that young trans person, we are going to show up and be noisy, NOISY queers at every campaign event either does until the election in November.

I look forward to her attempts to make ME shut up.

A dreamy morning in Central Frederick for the community garage sale! It was a great opportunity to meet neighbours and give a new home to gently used items. I snagged myself a hammock :) I also had some great conversations about protections for tenants that are being squeezed by the housing market. And finished by dipping in to Crushed Almond for a coffee. Delicious 😋#Kitchener #WRPoli

Last week in the community:

- celebrating the premiere of Sara Geidlinger’s documentary about The Circle of Music, an intergenerational choir pairing high school students and seniors with dementia

- learning how to unlearn at a Sanguen harm reduction workshop organized by King East Neighbourhood Association

- listening in at a Civic Punks meetup, discussing big questions around governance and public services with insights from around the globe

Hi FediPoliFolks! As there will be another municipal election in Ontario I've begun to gather candidate info for my local municipalities. Since I'm no longer on those commercial socialmedias, feel free to share in all the places where I'm not. And do let me know of corrections, omissions, or updates!

“This is really about the centralization of decision-making by the provincial government,” Craig said. “We are going to have a regional chair, appointed by the government, with extraordinary powers, who is accountable to the province of Ontario, not the people of Waterloo Region.” #WRpoli https://www.therecord.com/news/waterloo-region/regional-chair-appointed-ford-centralization-control-ontario-waterloo-region-governance/article_ad84090e-36e0-592a-85da-e46aa219d8d4.html
Debate grows in Waterloo Region over provincial control of regional chairs

Councillors worry the move would lead to more of a centralization of government and reduce local democracy

The Record
"Numerous studies have shown that not taking appropriate action is more expensive than investing in housing when you consider the costs associated with increased health care, incarceration, emergency shelters as well as femicides and familicides." #Housing #WRpoli https://doreenn.substack.com/p/ogp-mpp-aislinn-clancy-is-a-passionate
GPO MPP Aislinn Clancy is a passionate advocate

Ontarians should spend a maximum 30% of their gross income on housing. Ford vote down Bill 28 replacing it with omnibus Bill 60 that removed guard rails and made renting a free for all nightmare.

Small Change
"Democracy cannot be sustained on complaints alone. It grows when people who care about their communities recognize they have a role in shaping them." #WRpoli https://www.therecord.com/opinion/columnists/democracy-cannot-be-sustained-on-complaints-alone/article_91307f87-bf90-5fb1-be42-e57e2f539b47.html
Democracy cannot be sustained on complaints alone

2026 must be the year we show up for municipal politics, if we want communities that reflect our needs and values, writes Wazhma Frogh
