Wormrot – Hiss (2022, Singapore)
Our next spotlight is on number 97 on The List, submitted by Almoehi.
For those who love violin but wanted something that goes perhaps a bit harder than our last spotlight to help smash through “the darkest burden” that is the “broken maze” of this timeline and the “noxious cloud” and “vicious circle” that is “[our] dystopian hell”, this one’s for you. This is the 4th LP from the fabulous Singaporean grindcore trio, comprised of 21 tracks that average at about 1 minute in length, have titles such as the quotations above, and never cover the same ground twice.
I could attempt to summarize what Hiss sounds like but, instead, a story: For a mini blog-writing session, I listened to this slab of non-stop, unrelenting intensity directly after the previous spotlit album of contemporary classical music while my pupper slept soundly beside me. And though she was completely serene during the classical album, by the time the second track of Hiss came on, she was snarling in her sleep and frantically kicking her back legs. Then, just before we reached the end of the album, she suddenly woke up, asked to go out, and proceeded to start a puppy mosh pit in the backyard. So, you may experience the same upon listening.
Btw, a couple of the tracks from Hiss are on the live album Wormrot released last year, TNT, so perhaps check that out as well. Oh! And, if you know of the fantastic stoner/doom band Marijannah, that’s a side project of Wormrot’s guitarist Rasyid! I’d highly recommend giving both bands a listen today, we need all the help we can get.
