Albert Barnes, Pres pastor, on 1 Cor 9:25-26, says many Christians and ministers will want that crown but indulge in offensive things. Wine, luxurious living, laziness, and sloth, and tobacco are destructive to religious usefulness.
Was all opposition to wine mere prudish spoil-sporting, or were there (are there) serious justice aspects to sale? Can tobacco be enfeebling, or destructive to religious usefulness? It’s your body, right?
