The Curse of the Everything Device

“Over a single weekend, entirely from scratch and heavily “#VibeCoded”, I created by some distance the best #WordProcessor I have ever used. I’ve named it #vibedit. I’m writing in it right now. If there is an actually #productive task for #GenerativeAI, it is as a creator of #bespoke #tools like this. …
… far from removing me from my #work, this #AI experience forced me to think carefully about how I work, and how to craft a fitting tool. I was also confronted as any #craftsperson should be by the minutiae of my #tools”

Tempus-Word is a 1990s word processor for the Atari ST that three decades later is still used and, although no longer maintained, is available for download and partially supported. My all time favorite #wordprocessor, Lotus Word Pro, still runs under Windows 11 ARM :)
The exact same binary runs from Windows 95 onwards.
Like many other software it died because it was bought by IBM, which stopped development in 2007. Actually it stopped development well before 2007, but the last fixpack is from that year.
Word Pro is a child of Ami Pro, the first notable word processor for Windows.
„Dubbed the Electric Pencil by he and his wife, it was used it to write its own manual, and began its spread through the home computing scene. Landing on the TRS-80 series in 1978 opened it to a mass market, and the word processor genre was well and truly born.“
The FIRST #WordProcessor.
A disillusioned filmmaker turned beach bum turned a hobby project into millions by creating the first word processor for home computers. His creation was so compelling a jewelry salesman reinvented himself as a software publisher just to keep it alive. Let's see what all the fuss was about.
