The Curse Of The Everything Device

In theory having a single device that combines the features of multiple dedicated devices is a great idea, saving a lot of space, time and money. However, in reality it mostly means that these feat…

“Over a single weekend, entirely from scratch and heavily “#VibeCoded”, I created by some distance the best #WordProcessor I have ever used. I’ve named it #vibedit. I’m writing in it right now. If there is an actually #productive task for #GenerativeAI, it is as a creator of #bespoke #tools like this. …

… far from removing me from my #work, this #AI experience forced me to think carefully about how I work, and how to craft a fitting tool. I was also confronted as any #craftsperson should be by the minutiae of my #tools

Tempus-Word is a 1990s word processor for the Atari ST that three decades later is still used and, although no longer maintained, is available for download and partially supported. Remarkably, the program has unique features modern word processors miss, see the Information page of the official site.

This kit gives the AlphaSmart Neo2 more of a portable typewriter-like design

The AlphaSmart Neo2 is a portable word processor that was released nearly two decades ago as a device that provides a distraction-free writing experience without all the extra stuff that comes with a full-fledged laptop computer. With a small greyscale LCD display, a full-sized keyboard, and compact design, it continues to have fans.

But that doesn’t mean it couldn’t be improved. WriterDeck […]

My all time favorite #wordprocessor, Lotus Word Pro, still runs under Windows 11 ARM :)

The exact same binary runs from Windows 95 onwards.

Like many other software it died because it was bought by IBM, which stopped development in 2007. Actually it stopped development well before 2007, but the last fixpack is from that year.

Word Pro is a child of Ami Pro, the first notable word processor for Windows.

Ah, #TidBITS, the fountain of wisdom on all things #Apple, where "thoughtful, detailed coverage" means pondering the existential crisis of a word processor that may or may not exist. 🤔💻 If #Schrödinger were a software developer, he'd surely be proud of introducing more uncertainty into our lives. 🐱‍💻

Nisus Writer: Schrödinger’s Word Processor - TidBITS

The powerful word processor hasn’t seen an update in nearly a year, it has disappeared from the Mac App Store, and support responses have been slow or nonexistent for some time. There is writing on the wall, and it’s not looking good.

It's easy to turn any obsolete #retrocomputing #laptop into a #distractionfree #writing device. You just install a GUI-less version of #DOS or your favorite #Linux distro, install your favorite #vintage text-based
#wordprocessor and presto! The problem comes when you want to sync your writing up to Dropbox or read your files in Google Docs or you want good notes organization or research tools or any of the other conveniences the #internet offers to authors.
#Linux #ubuntu question: my limitation to ditch windows entirely is that I need to be able to do #academic writing #WordProcessor, i. e. texts with footnotes and with access to my library database. have been using #notabene for decades and have an extensive library database built up. so far I have been unable to run Notabene on Linux. tried exporting the library database to #zotero once and that was a mess. any thoughts appreciated...

„Dubbed the Electric Pencil by he and his wife, it was used it to write its own manual, and began its spread through the home computing scene. Landing on the TRS-80 series in 1978 opened it to a mass market, and the word processor genre was well and truly born.“

Electric Pencil on the TRS-80

A disillusioned filmmaker turned beach bum turned a hobby project into millions by creating the first word processor for home computers. His creation was so compelling a jewelry salesman reinvented himself as a software publisher just to keep it alive. Let's see what all the fuss was about.
