undefined | Arrest as £200k stolen from scouts trip fund

A 46‑year‑old man was arrested on suspicion of theft after roughly £200,000 raised for a Herefordshire and Worcestershire scouts trip to Canada went missing from a charity bank account. The money, intended to fund a two‑week excursion for 100 children and 27 volunteer leaders, was raised through extensive parent‑led fundraising efforts that began last year, with each child’s place costing about £2,750.

Scout leaders have now cancelled the trip, which was slated for July or August and would have visited destinations such as Toronto and Niagara. Parents have been told the missing funds will be refunded, but the process could take several weeks. One parent, whose 13‑year‑old son was due to attend, said the loss of more than £2,200 was “devastating,” while another expressed frustration after spending 100 hours on fundraising.

A letter to parents indicated the money was believed to have been taken “over an extended period of time” from a dedicated trip account. The Hereford and Worcester Scouts say they have reported the incident to both police and the Charity Commission and have committed to covering any shortfall so that families are not disadvantaged. West Mercia Police confirmed the arrest and that the investigation remains ongoing.
