Not everyone is welcome at the chicken buffet! 🐭

This wood mouse (*Apodemus sylvaticus*) was caught sneaking into the chicken run, clearly hoping to share in the meal — but the chickens had other plans and chased it off without hesitation. Can't really blame either side!

Wood mice are a common but often overlooked part of garden wildlife. They're mostly active at dusk and dawn, and play an important role in the ecosystem as seed dispersers and prey for owls, foxes, and other predators. Seeing one out in the open like this is a treat — they're usually far too quick to photograph.

Niet iedereen is welkom aan het kippenbuffet! 🐭

[EN] If this young wood mouse (Apodemus sylvaticus, family Muridae) haven't jumped just as I was walking past it, I wouldn't have noticed it was there. After that, it stayed still and I was able to take a couple of photos. I tried not to disturb him much and I left him alone. I hope he could find its mother soon.
Photographed with the mobile phone on 2026/04/27 in the province of Cáceres (Spain) in a meadow with oaks (a "dehesa").

Today after finishing their #hedgewatch the humans met this little #rodent in the neighbours #garden 😻 We think it's a #woodmouse 😻

Wood mice were the first mammals in which a magnetic sense was proven; that is, they have a built-in compass.

Found a very dozy pair of Wood Mice on the outskirts of Bath today. Picked one up briefly to check for the rarer Yellow-necked Mouse, which has a complete yellow band across the neck. This one only had a small patch, so definitely a Wood Mouse. I returned it to its bed and its friend after examining it.
