The Self-Doubt of October
This morning, I spelled out the word October, and for some reasonâdespite having spelled it at least 23 times in the last 23 daysâI thought, âThat doesnât look right.â I second-guessed myself and searched for confirmation. Once again, the mind proves to be a very strange place to live.
Iâve never had trouble with October before, but February has been a lifelong adversary. That first ârâ always trips me up. Though, to be fair, I spelled it correctly just now, so perhaps âforeverâ is too strong a word. Often or usually might be more accurate.
Another word that historically gives me trouble is Wednesday. And yes, I needed spellcheck to get it right this time. I meanâwhatâs up with that first âdâ? Where did it come from?
Curious, I looked it up. Wednesday comes from the Anglo-Saxon WĆdnesdĂŠg, named after the god WĆdenâWodenâs Day. So apparently, back in the long-ago olden days, the âdâ was actually pronounced. Iâd never heard of Woden before, but his name is akin to Odin, the Norse god.
I wondered: Is Woden the same as Odin? As you might expect, I looked it up. And yesâWoden and Odin are essentially the same mythic figure, expressed through different cultural lenses.
Hmm... I meant to write about something else entirely. Something about the drama of humans, which feels so small when you consider weâre just tiny creatures floating on a speck of dust in the vastness of the cosmos. But then came the self-doubt of October.
