Working on a painting for my mother in law’s birthday. It’s Saturday so this is a total CRUNCH time project. I should have started on this sooner. Paintings take so much thought and agonizing for me. Hoping doing some preplanning will help the later stages. I did some sketch work first to come up with a basic idea of the painting. I’m going to paint a female and male cardinal. My MIL loves cardinals. I need to work on the male now, it’s not as exciting. He’s so boring, all red. I love the female cardinal. She’s so pretty with all her many pretty colors. Working on the next layer of the body. I just need to do the back feathers. I was so afraid of this part, unsure of how I would do the colors. I wasn’t happy Saturday after o got done painting for the day. Loved painting on this textured linen with its lovely revealed edges.. However, building the gesso up a bit more in the painted area so it could be smoothed down to an eggshell smooth surface would have served the painting method used much better I think..

The Dawning Light WIP

Hiya guys, I've got this awesome high octagon roof ceiling in my house that I've always wanted to paint ever since moving in. It's especially beautiful in the morning as the sunlight beams through the high windows above. From the earliest kindlings of light from passing traffic and the subsequent hours passing by there after, the beams move down, shifting, every moment is beautiful.

On to the second piece! Refining and adjusting the drawing before starting the paint layer here.. Unlike the preliminary drawing in charcoal pencil, Nero Wax Charcoal is used at this stage so I can draw over the shellac with ease.. Something I was reminded of in the first of these mixed media's..
