Looking down the left hand branch of Black Spout, Coire of Lochnagar, Aberdeenshire. The north wall of this Winter Grade 1/2 gulley was heavily iced up in December 2020, with intricate icicles forming after cyclical freeze-thaw weather conditions. The spout itself drops some 250m from the mountain plateau to the lochan that gives the mountain its name.

After a warm start to the Autumn its great winter has arrived for December. Over the last few weeks and a bit, we have had teams enjoying winter ascents of #BenNevis, #CurvedRidge a 4-day #WinterMountaineering Course and a #MtDenali prep course.
We haven’t had the same amount of #snow as the Cairngorms overall, but it has been extremely cold all the way to sea level freezing all the turf, a big dump of snow on this now would be a great start to the season.
