ROAMING THE REGION: SEASONAL ACTIVITIES IN KW AND BEYOND
Holiday season comes with a plethora of options to add to your social calendar. Get those tote bags out, call your friends, bundle up the kids and get set to enjoy the many different faces of the holiday season.
Kitchener
From Dec. 3-23, the My Pet Skeleton Krampus Market will take over the Square Peg storefront at Kitchener City Hall. Think of it as Waterloo Region’s Tim Burton, but cooler because he’s your neighbour. Find haunted Christmas prints, spooky ornaments and mischievous art by Canadian talent. Run, don’t walk—items won’t last long.
From Dec. 4-7, the annual Christkindl Market returns to Downtown Kitchener for its twenty-ninth year. Canada’s oldest German Christmas market is free to attend and perfect for families with young kids, date night, or a stroll with friends or on your own. Shop local vendors, warm up with gluhwein, skate under falling snowflakes, and enjoy live entertainment, horse and wagon rides, firepits with free S’mores kits, food trucks, a Santa shuttle (bring your letters!), a toy and non-perishable food drive for The Salvation Army.
From Dec. 5-9, the eighth annual KrampusKindl will delight folk who love the spooky, eerie, and mystical. The atmosphere is antithetical to more traditional holiday events; the talented artisans and vendors, however, are equally impressive. Bring your totes and fill them with holiday gifts.
On Dec. 7 at Victoria Park Pavilion, the Indigenous Winter Art Market and Feast will take place between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Hosted by Healing of the Seven Generations, the annual potluck Feast will happen at 4 p.m.
CAMBRIDGE
From Nov. 15 to Dec. 31, the city of Cambridge turns into a winter wonderland with Cambridge Winterfest. Starting with the Santa Claus Parade in November, there are a flurry of events, including the Preston Tree Lighting on Dec. 1, Phil Kline’s Unsilent Night on Dec 5, the previously mentioned Cambridge Holiday Market Dec. 5 to 7, Candyland Dec. 13 and a grand New Year’s Eve party Dec. 31.
From Dec. 5-7, Cambridge hosts its award-winning Christmas Market at Cambridge City Hall and the Cambridge Centre for the Arts. There will be over 100 local artists selling handmade gifts.
St. Mary’s
From Dec. 5-7, St. Mary’s is hosting its WinterLights Night Market at Milt Dunnell Field from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. There will be more than 100 lit up holiday scenes, as well as a food and art market.
PARIS
From Dec. 6-7, Paris’ tenth annual Stocking Stuffer Event will take place at the Paris Fairgrounds from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. Sip sweet treats to warm you up, participate in the Christmas Ornament Exchange, bring your Santa letters or take a selfie with him, and don’t forget to stock up on gifts for the special people in your life. Admission is $5. Kids 10-years-old and under are free.
GUELPH
On Dec. 6, head down the highway to Guelph for the Enchanted Holiday Market at the Royal Canadian Legion. The event is free to attend and goes from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Santa and his elves (the artisans) will be there. The first 30 attendees will receive a free Christmas swag bag.
WELLESLEY
From Dec. 12-13, head to Wellesley for the Christmas Tyme Craft Market at the Bill Gies Rec Complex. Stock up your cupboards with locally made treats like maple syrup, cheese, meat, jams and more. Fill your stockings with candles, crafts and other home décor.
