We are building a snow ridge over a small stream that we weren’t comfortable crossing. Sometimes these rivers and streams might look like they have thick ice or a thick pad of snow that can support your weight. However, often there is open water under the snow, and if there isn’t enough snow or ice, you risk plunging through and getting wet or stuck in the hole, which is, of course, not desirable in the winter. We built the ridge in the evening so it would harden overnight and be more likely to support our weight.
