"He pushed on towards the Wild Wood, which lay before him low and threatening, like a black reef in some still southern sea. There was nothing to alarm him at first entry. Twigs crackled under his feet, logs tripped him, funguses on stumps resembled caricatures, and startled him for the moment by their likeness to something familiar and far away; but that was all fun, and exciting. It led him on, and he penetrated to where the light was less, and trees crouched nearer and nearer, and holes made ugly mouths at him on either side.... Then the faces began."

On this day in 1859, author of much-loved children's classic #storybook #WindintheWillows Kenneth Grahame, was born.

Naturally Toad, Ratty, Badger and Mole play a central role in my #painting of Old Father #Thames.

β€œThere is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats."

See the whole painting here: https://janetomlinson.com/products/old-father-thames It's a cracker!

"Oh, Mole! The beauty of it! The merry bubble and joy, the thin, clear, happy call of the distant piping! The call in it is stronger even than the music is sweet! Row on, Mole, row! For the music and the call must be for us."

"When they got home, the Rat made a bright fire in the parlour, and planted the Mole in an armchair in front of it, having fetched down a dressing-gown and slippers for him, and told him river stories till supper-time."

When my youngest was in neonatal ICU (25+ years ago), I sat there for a long time and read the Wind and the Willows to him, and we bought him little soft toys of Ratty, Moley, Toad and Badger.

I still clearly remember reading the rhyme-

A pistol for Rat,
A pistol for Mole,
A pistol for Toad,
A pistol for BAAAADDDGERR!

Let's start everything with a quote; how nice it would be to experience this today.

"The line of the horizon was clear and hard against the sky, and in one particular quarter it showed black against a silvery climbing phosphorescence that grew and grew. At last, over the rim of the waiting earth the moon lifted with slow majesty till it swung clear of the horizon and rode off, free of moorings..."

"The country lay bare and entirely leafless around him.... He had never seen so far and so intimately into the insides of things as on that winter day when Nature was deep in her annual slumber and seemed to have kicked the clothes off."

"Some eight or ten little fieldmice stood in a semicircle.... As the door opened, one of the elder ones that carried the lantern was just saying, 'Now then, one, two, three!' and forthwith their shrill little voices uprose on the air, singing one of the old-time carols that their forefathers composed in fields that were fallow and held by frost, or when snow-bound in chimney corners, and handed down to be sung in the miry street to lamp-lit windows at Yule-time."
