William H. Johnson, « Moon Over Harlem » (Lune au-dessus de Harlem), vers 1943-1944. Cette toile est une commémoration des émeutes de 1943 à Harlem, après que Robert Bandy, un soldat afro-américain, simple témoin de l’arrestation d’une femme noire pour tapage dans un hôtel, ait été tué par un policier. La police avait alors affirmé que Bandy aurait agressé un policier, qui a ensuite tiré sur Bandy alors que celui-ci s’enfuyait… L’événement provoqua des émeutes qui durèrent plusieurs jours et firent plusieurs morts.

American artist William Henry Johnson and Danish textile artist Holcha Krake married in 1930. The union was to have a strong influence on Johnson’s art as Holcha’s folk art, rooted in the past, become an inspiration for Johnson’s future works

After their marriage, the couple spent the next eight years in rural Denmark and Norway, taking trips across Europe, however, with the rise of Nazi influence in Europe, the couple chose to make their way to the United States in 1938. It was here that Johnson’s work began to focus more heavily on his African American roots.

Holcha passed away in America in 1944 aged 58 years. Willie died in 1970 at age 69
