British-German astronomer #WilliamHerschel discovered the seventh planet, #Uranus, on #ThisDayInHistory in 1781. A unique world that spins on its side with a 98-degree axial tilt, its pale cyan colour comes from a frigid atmosphere made up mainly of hydrogen, helium, & methane.

Happy birthday to Uranus!

On 3/13/1781, William Herschel observed Uranus and correctly identified it as a planet rather than a star. If we'd only taken his suggestion to name the planet after King George III, we would have been spared centuries of schoolboy sniggers about the "discovery of your anus".

The first 9 (of 13) #RingsOfUranus were definitively found on #ThisDayInHistory in 1977. All the gas giants have them, though #Saturn's were seen much earlier. The first claimed sighting of any at #Uranus was by #WilliamHerschel in 1789, but it is doubted he could have seen them.
Elephant's Trunk Nebula and its locality (IC1396): My first attempt to adapt a thirty years old 90mm f2.8 macro lens to an astro camera. 4 nights in Feb-March '26, total exposure 3 hrs 37 min, narrowband Ha-Oiii filter, processed in Siril.
The bright red star on the outer edge of the nebula at 4 o'clock is Mu Cephei, William Herschel's Garnet Star, one of the largest stars in our galaxy.

A white-dwarf day with Ja’net Danielo, James Joyce, and Wikipedia

Yesterday was a white-dwarf day. First, I read a poem by Ja'net Danielo that begins with one: "All last year, I waited for a white dwarf". Later, I read a passage from James Joyce's "Finnegans Wake" that mentions one: "The giant sun is in his emanence but which is chief

The #German-#British astronomer #WilliamHerschel first observed, on #ThisDayInHistory in 1787, the #Uranus moons #Titania and #Oberon.
I first learnt of Herschel as a young boy from seeing him on the #NewDeal-funded Astronomers Monument up at #GriffithObservatory in Los Angeles.
