🥾 We hiked past a water impoundment that is usually disruptive to a mountaintop environment, but this one was full of salamanders!

🦎 These amphibians prefer cold, clean, running water as in pristine streams. This pond had to be relatively undisturbed.

📷 I stayed still and got a pic of a Spotted Salamander as it floated into a sunny spot. Love the orange spots!

I was going to take a break from posting today but as it's #wildlifewednesday I couldn't resist.

Here's an image taken on my old camera in 2023 of a Red Kite in flight. In England there have been several conservation successes with these birds over the last 20-30 years. In certain places they almost feel as common as garden birds!

A new post on Raff's Reflections:

Killing with Kindness: The Problem with Feeding Wildlife

https://raffkarva.com/blog/posts/wildlife/killing-with-kindness/

__

I often see neighbours leaving food out for foxes and birds where I live. I decided to investigate what the science actually says, and what I found troubled me enough to write about it.

The research shows feeding wildlife spreads disease, benefits common aggressive species over the ones that actually need help, and introduces antibiotic-resistant bacteria into wild populations.

The post isn't about judging neighbours. It's about what the evidence says and what people who genuinely love wildlife should be doing instead.

Peru: Quechua Women Lead Efforts to Protect Pumas

⛰️ In Peru’s Andean highlands, Quechua women once killed pumas in retaliation for livestock losses.

🌳 Now, through a women-led conservation group, practical measures such as improved corrals, nonlethal deterrents and forest protection have sharply reduced conflict and ended retaliatory wildcat killings.

🦙 An alpaca wool textile cooperative links conservation with women’s economic empowerment, strengthening both livelihoods and wildlife protection.

In Peru’s Andes, Quechua women turn human-wildcat conflict into coexistence

AYACUCHO, Peru — High in the Peruvian Andes, a group of Indigenous Quechua women is transforming long-standing conflict with wildcats into a model of coexistence, conservation and cultural revival. A new film, Women Secure a Future with Pumas in the Andes, examines how the fear of predators like the puma (Puma concolor), pampas cat (Leopardus […]
