@jfmezei As a resident of the “easternmost of the Hawaiian Islands” (aka Vancouver Island), I envy you your outdoor ice. Once upon a time, when I was a child, we had wild ice, regularly. It was magic. We skated. We skated arm-in-arm over flooded fields. We played shinny til dark.

@vi

I’ve biked out to this lake in #ChugachStatePark to go ice skating probably 4-5 times over the past 15 years. Had never seen anyone else there, until last year when we crossed paths with a group of 4. Today there were easily 100 people!
#WildIce skating has exploded. #NordicSkating

Looking under and over the Colchester Causeway towards the Adirondacks, back in February. One of those beautiful days on Outer Malletts Bay. I took this photo standing on the edge of the ice plate; the foreground of the photos is water; underneath the bridge you can see the ice starting up agin.

Sound on for full lasers. Skating on extremely thin and perfect black ice, back in January.

Goose Pond stumptown skate, last week. The dam is being repaired, so there’s only about a foot of water under the ice, exposing all kinds of interesting objects, including this grove of stumps.

I’ve been trying to figure out how to get a skates’ eye view for a while now, finally getting close. This is not sped up, and I’m not skating quickly; it’s the low angle perspective that makes it seem fast.

Skating across Outer Malletts Bay, looking towards Whiteface and the Adirondacks, a couple weeks ago.
