#QuestionOfTheWeek — Do you have Appalachian roots?🌄
▶️ https://www.youtube.com/shorts/Tu-J5US-1Vc

The misty hollows and ridge-top farms of Appalachia sheltered families for generations — and their stories are woven into one of America's most distinctive regional cultures. Whether your ancestors came through the Great Wagon Road, settled the Blue Ridge, or farmed the coal country of West Virginia and Kentucky, those mountain connections run deep.

Do you have Appalachian roots? Where from — and any surprising connections you've uncovered?

Share your story and join the conversation on WikiTree's G2G community forum. You might even find cousins you never knew you had! 🌿

Also, be sure to check out the WikiTree Appalachia Project, and join a live chat this Thursday or Saturday for Appalachian Research Get-to-Know parties.

@splitbrain Some years ago, during my first #ConnectAThon at #WikiTree, where you basically sit at the PC from Friday 2 PM until Monday 2 PM, I decided that I can't sit at the PC all the time (which was kinda weird, because it's not like I didn't do that before ...). So I decided, that I will pretend to have a dog and take three walks with it per day. It felt good and I kept it up (although the frequency somehow decreased to two times per day after my COVID infection two years ago).

Like this, there is no poor dog sitting at home all day and it won't pee on the floor, if I decide to walk two hours later. Also, nobody sees its poo 😉

Belated #3GoodThings:
- started a political discussion with a younger person that might turn interesting in the next days
- found a source that kind of proves the origin of my 9th great-grandmother Maria Bank https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Bank-311, which allowed me to create her father and also connect that one to her brother Gallus Bank, my 8h great-grandfather on another line
- had an unexpected encounter with an old friend

Bonus: Schnitzel with napkin dumplings at the company restaurant was good.

#QuestionOfTheWeek — Tell us about your mother (or another mother in your family tree)! 🤶

This week, WikiTree's G2G community is celebrating Mothers Week by inviting genealogists and family historians to share the stories of the mothers in their trees.

Every family tree is shaped by the women whose names are sometimes the hardest to find in the historical record. This is a chance to honor them — and to connect with a global community of researchers who understand just how meaningful that work is.

Bei #WikiTree wurde mit dem Aufbau des "Romania Project" begonnen. Ziel ist es, WikiTree-Benutzer mit Forschungsschwerpunkt Rumänien zu verbinden. Noch ist die Projektseite eher rudimentär.

The early mornings and evenings of the last two days I spent pondering and writing on the profile of my 8th great-grandfather Gallus Bank. I mainly worked with the notes of #Hinterzarten parish priest Vincenz Zahn, who left over 200 pages of notes about the houses and their owners, which he compiled from the church books, an enquiry of the whole parish and a lot of archive visits in the early 1800s. It was touching to read the notes about Gallus that were written in the course of two years and to see, how Zahn learned more, crossed out passages and asked himself the same questions, which I did now.

Currently, it really seems that the author of the 1990s farm chronicles did not dive into this particular family as deep as I did (which makes sense, because he had to write a book about the whole village), so he just went for the easiest road and missed Zahn's final conclusion. Luckily, I had a source, they both very likely didn't have access to, which kind of confirms that the newer chronicles were wrong.

And now I am constantly obsessing about details from the case, asking myself if I really just landed a breakthrough in the still pretty scary field of "before church book #genealogy"?

Today is the 132nd birthday of my surprise grandfather, discovered via DNA testing. Greene Jones was a lawyer in North Georgia, USA.
