This morning we went to the Amish market to get some breakfast before heading to hippy Halloween. As usual, place was crowded. So after we get our food, we're looking for a table and they're all full of people except for one table. There was an man sitting there, who was in his 80's I'd assume.
I'm a polite person, so I say "hey sir, do you mind if we sit here with you while we eat?" He said "Of course", and we sat.
He noticed our tie dye clothes and wacky outfits we had on for Hippy Halloween and commented that it reminded him of his youth. He went on to tell me about his days in the Navy, and so much more. It was around this time, I noticed no wedding band was on his finger. So, I figured he probably came here to eat, by himself, and was excited to have someone to talk to.
So we talked for a while, and he told me about a book he'd read that he really enjoyed, and told me he couldn't remember the title. So, I gave him my info, and he said he'd call with the title and the author.
He called while we were driving home and left a voicemail, so I called him back when I got home. He offered to let me borrow his copy of the book so I didn't have to trouble myself with finding it. After saying I'd come and get it, he asked where I'd be coming from...so I told him Pasadena.
This man, who I talked with for maybe an hour and doesn't know me otherwise said "oh don't drive all this way, I'll just put it in the mail for ya Monday."
I could have easily just bought it online, but this sweet old man really wants me to have his copy. So here I am, patiently waiting for a book to show up, so I can read it and call him again and let him know that I enjoyed it.
I'm typically pretty introverted. But today, I'm glad I asked if it was okay to sit down. Can't wait to have John's book show up in the mail and give it a read.
