White Arc

I spotted this white pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) a few years back, gliding low over the Calcasieu Ship Channel in Cameron Parish, Louisiana. The original image was a bit fuzzy, but this version shows improved detail—especially around the wings and feathering. The yellow skin around the beak and eyes appears slightly artificial when zoomed in, but overall, it’s a passable image. A moment of motion, preserved with just enough clarity to honor the bird’s grace.

Pelicans by the Shore

This image shows a raft of white pelicans (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos). I recently learned that a group of pelicans resting in the water is called a raft. The photo isn't great—I struggled to get a good angle on the pelicans from the ferry I was on, and my camera at the time wasn't as good as the ones I use now for wildlife photography. Today, I wondered whether they were hunting or resting. White pelicans typically hunt in groups by herding fish towards the shore. However, based on their demeanor in this image, I would guess they are resting.

Calm Waters

This is my second favorite species of pelican in North America. Of course, there are only two species: the Brown Pelican and the White Pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos). When I see them, they are usually languidly floating on the surface of the water. Brown Pelicans, however, I often see flying off the coast and sometimes diving into the water to catch a fish. White Pelicans, on the other hand, don't dive; they usually group fish, working together to herd the fish into shallow water where they can scoop them up.

Pelican Glide

This is a soft focused image of a American White Pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) that I was while crossing the Calcasieu Ship Channel in Cameron Parish, Louisiana. The crossing is via a ferry.

Pelican Ballet in Azure Skies

Here is a small flock of white pelicans (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) flying over the Calcasieu Ship Channel, in Camerson Parish, Louisiana near the Gulf of Mexico.

"One of the largest North American birds, the American White Pelican is majestic in the air. The birds soar with incredible steadiness on broad, white-and-black wings. Their large heads and huge, heavy bills give them a prehistoric look. On the water they dip their pouched bills to scoop up fish, or tip-up like an oversized dabbling duck.
