@tuxicoman @prav I think network effects are the biggest hurdle, if everyone is on #xmpp then features won't matter much, conversely telegram has more features but can't replace #WhatsApp just because features alone.

En Fdroid existe la app #ChatLaunch, que te permite iniciar una conversación en #whatsapp con un número de teléfono sin necesidad de agendarlo.
¿Por qué la uso? Porque no le concedí ningún permiso a la app de whatsapp (ni contactos, ni al almacenamiento, ni a las fotos). Eso me dificulta el uso de la app para todo lo que sea trivial (como subir estados o mandar fotos) y me ayuda a limitarme a cuestiones administrativas.
(Hasta que se normalice un standard de mensajería seguro y descentralizado como #DeltaChat o #XMPP.)

BTW, #DeltaChat has proven to be able to get through "the great firewall". So, a real world example that it is a great encrypted chat alternative and/or backup to #Signal #Matrix & #WhatsApp

I'm really glad that there are so many good alternatives being worked on, both in terms of #hardware and #software

For most users, though, I think the learning curve for many of the alternatives is still quite steep. And even when it's simple enough, the social pressure to stick with what the vast majority uses is absurdly strong.

The #Fediverse works wonderfully already, but people are afraid of missing out if they leave the #bigtech offerings behind.

Even switching from #WhatsApp to @signalapp is perceived even by many who know that WhatsApp is problematic at best as a burden too significant to bother with.

And awareness is still lacking. Some communities with which I have connections have excellent intentions, but appear to be completely unaware of the dangers of dependence upon #platforms and #tools run by questionably #scrupulous entities.
