Small #retrocomputing bugbear/nitpick/PSA:

#Windows 3.11 was not otherwise known as "Windows for workgroups". The product was named "Windows for workgroups 3.11", the reason being that there's also a regular ass Windows 3.11!

There's also Windows for workgroups 3.1! It was just super buggy, especially for networking which was a bit of an issue. So there were free upgrades to 3.11

Also, you could buy an upgrade for 3.1 to "for workgroups".

Hier gibt's jetzt auch die originalen Microsoft Disketten für Word 6.0 für Windows 3.1. Hab vor dem Scannen noch versucht, alles so sauber wie möglich zu reinigen und funktionieren tun sie jetzt auch einwandfrei in 86Box.

Der deutschsprachige Diskettensatz für Microsoft Works 2.0 für Windows 3.x steht ab sofort im Internet Archive zur Verfügung. Auf insgesamt 8 x 720K DD-Disketten aus dem Jahr 1991 gibt es eine einfache Textverarbeitung, Tabellenkalkulation und Datenbankfunktionen.

Es überrascht mich immer wieder, was man so alles noch spät Nachts im Netz findet, was man bisher doch noch gar nicht im Blick hatte!

Im Jahre 2023 wurden sämtliche ältere Versionen von SpeedCommander komplett als Freeware veröffentlicht, inkl. der 16-Bit Versionen 1,2 und III+ für Windows 3.1. Ich war jetzt nie der größte Fan dieses Datei-Managers, aber ich beschwere mich nicht über offiziell kostenlose Retro-Software.

Using a virtual 386SX 25 MHz and WfW 3.11, I recently tried to install StarOffice 3.1 from 1996. And while this one still has an official 16-bit version, it did feel completely out of place on that system.

Seriously! The setup process, installing from CD-ROM, took nearly an hour to complete and consumed almost 100MB of harddisk space. Opening the applications, like StarWriter or StarCalc, feels extremely sluggish and their user interfaces looks super overcrowded with multiple levels of toolbars and useless internet tools everywhere.

Useless complaints in 2025? "Yes", but also "No". It shows how the entire software industry simply forgot how to use system resources efficiently as soon as the hardware limitations were lifted. Today, even simple programs or games often require hundreds of megabytes of disk space! I still cannot be made to believe this is acceptable.

Just added another 5.25" floppy disk release from CSmeds99's recent Internet Archive uploads to my personal retro collection: "Microsoft Office 4.3 Professional". This version from 1994 came on 37 x 1.2MB HD diskettes, which really is A LOT! It just took me about an hour to verify them. I guess at that point in time, I remember why everyone just went for CD-ROMs! Holy cow! 😃

Bei mir lag heute eine seltene 1995er CD-Version von Microsoft Word 6.0a für Windows 3.1 im Briefkasten. Hab euch natürlich gleich ein ISO-Image der CD-ROM, sowie einen schicken 300dpi Scan ins Internet-Archive gestellt. Kann ja vielleicht jemand brauchen.

Im Jahre 1999 veröffentlichte Microsoft einen Haufen kritischer Jahr-2000 Updates und Patches für ihre Software. Aus heutiger Sicht wichtig war v.a. auch der fehlerbereinigte Datei-Manager WINFILE.EXE unter Windows 3.1 und WfW 3.11, der so angepasst auch 2025 noch problemlos funktionert.

Da ich hierfür endlich auch eine richtige physische Quelle haben wollte, hab ich mir nun mal die offizielle Microsoft Jahr 2000 Ressourcen CD besorgt. Es handelt sich um die finale Version dieser Disc vom November 1999.
