Haven't tied flies in a couple of months. Need something visible for murky water this week. These are #8 partridge patriot single hooks. The wing is squirrel tail. The marabou "beard" is inspired by the classic steelhead fly heron hackle. I will pinch the barbs and clip the dangling thread when the head cement is dry.
I made it back up to the Nantahala National Forest this past weekend. The leaves were not yet in full swing, but they were beautiful all the same.
I did not see a trout. The fish in the photo is a rosyside dace (a minnow). It ate a size 18 wet fly.

All of the adult fish that I caught this weekend were brook trout. They must be stocked because I've not seen them in this creek before. This is the stream that I got my new-to-me Tenkara Rod Company Kita, and it worked really well on this trip. I was fishing with size #12 and #14 unweighted wet flies.

I bought a barnyard rooster skin on eBay, and it turned out a little on the ratty side. On the other hand, I have some primo flytying-bred chicken feathers that I am afraid to use because they are so expensive. I am not afraid to use my ratty rooster skin. It was not a small bird, so even the ugly feathers have plenty of barbs to palmer around a hook.
I've got here three wet flies. In each case, the rear palmered feather is a stiffer pheasant feather, and the front palmered feather is a softer rooster feather. The orange hotspot is recycled leftover backing.
