"During the Second World War, it was taken over by the Admiralty and renamed HMS Birnbeck. It may have been unable to set sail, but HMS Birnbeck played a key role in the war as a research station for the Directorate of Miscellaneous Weapons Development, where it worked on evolutions of the “bouncing bomb” from the Dambusters raid."

"The pier, which is unique in being the only one in the country to connect to an island, was designed by master pier builder Eugenius Birch and opened in 1867. The North Jetty brought visitors to the pier on steamers but was last used in 1979. It partially collapsed in a storm in 2015."
