In a recent breakthrough study involving more than 50 global climate researchers, we now have a clearer projection of how carbon emissions may influence the degeneration of Antarctica’s ice sheet over the next three centuries... earth.com #antarctica #icesheets #icesheetcollapse #globalwarming #climatechange #westantarctica #glaciers #climatescience #carbonemissions
Using the unmanned submarine Ran, researchers mapped the underside of West Antarctica's Dotson Ice Shelf, uncovering complex ice formations and significant melt areas driven by underwater currents, crucial for enhancing sea level rise predictions. An international research team from the Universit

An ice shelf is a mass of glacial ice, fed from land by tributary glaciers, that floats in the sea above an ice shelf cavity. Dotson Ice Shelf is part of the West Antarctic ice sheet—and next to Thwaites Glacier—which is considered to have a potentially large impact on future sea level rise due to its size and location... The Dutch were already fucked, but now they are even more. But who cares about the Dutch, let's concentrate on the disasters going to happen in Bangladesh and other critical locations in the Global South.
Dr. Gilbz: *Antarctica might raise sea levels more than we thought*
https://youtube.com/watch?v=7THoXri-kdg
"The West Antarctic is currently chucking a load of ice into the ocean, adding rapidly to sea levels. And now, three new scientific studies have shown that the ice sheets may be more sensitive to warming than previously thought. These new findings could revise our sea level rise estimates upwards. I spoke to Dr Alex Bradley, who was involved in two of these new studies, about what this means, and why it doesn’t mean we should give up on climate action. Speaking of which... "

The collapse of Antarctica’s ice sheets would be disastrous. A group of scientists has an idea to save them. June 12, 2024 The edge of Greenland’s ice sheet looked like a big lick of sludgy white frosting spilling over a rise of billion-year-old brown rock. Inside the Twin Otter’s cabin, there were five of us: two pilots, a scientist, an engineer, and me. Farther north, we would have needed another seat for a rifle-armed guard. Here, we were told to just look around for polar-bear tracks on our
Ocean water is rushing miles underneath the ‘#DoomsdayGlacier’ with potentially dire impacts on #SeaLevelRise

"The #ThwaitesGlacier in #WestAntarctica — nicknamed the 'Doomsday Glacier' because its collapse could cause catastrophic sea level rise — is the world’s widest glacier and roughly the size of Florida. It’s also #Antarctica’s most vulnerable and unstable glacier, in large part because the land on which it sits slopes downward, allowing ocean waters to eat away at its ice.
"#Thwaites, which already contributes 4% to global #Sea Level rise, holds enough ice to raise sea levels by more than 2 feet. But because it also acts as a natural dam to the surrounding ice in West Antarctica, scientists have estimated its complete collapse could ultimately lead to around 10 feet of sea level rise — a catastrophe for the world’s #coastal communities."
