Starmer is stinking excrement.

I hate Corbyn, deeply, for all sorts of reasons: his incompetence, his undoubted antisemitism. (Please unfollow me if you disagree.)

But Starmer is worse than the Tories. Taking money away from the poorest in society, talking about "getting back to work" for people who can't work, and now expelling those of his MPs who stand by the Labour values of fairness and kindness. It stinks.

Greens or LibDems, or the national parties in Scotland and Wales. Labour is dead.

Keir Starmer removes Labour whip from four ‘persistent rebel’ MPs

Rachael Maskell, Neil Duncan-Jordan, Brian Leishman and Chris Hinchliff pushed out and three trade envoys lose roles

The Guardian

“We fought Corbyn for five years,” said the MP, “and there she [Rachael Maskell] is cosying up to him. It’s not a great look for someone looking to win over colleagues to her cause.”

These Labour MPs fought for five years to stop their party being run on vaguely democratic and humane principles. Now they are worried that the inhumane politics they ‘fought’ for might cause their constituents to turn against them at the even more vaguely democratic general election.

This cartoon absolutely nails it.

Shame on Starmer, shame on every MP who voted for this bill. Yes, it was diluted by some random concessions, but it still is the most shameful thing the current Labour government has done.

And: respect to those Labour MPs who spoke up against this depravity.

But Labour is dead.

Ella Baron on Labour pushing through its welfare reform bill – cartoon

The government avoided the embarrassment of a defeat in the Commons but more than 40 Labour MPs still voted against the cut in disability benefits

The Guardian

Today's Common Weal briefing.

Starmer's climbdowns over the welfare bill was the result of a complete failure to develop policy and win consensus before turning up to the chamber. The consequences will echo for a long time yet.

The UK’s Welfare shambles will have a long echo — Common Weal

When you are Keir Starmer and you have an almost unmatched majority in a Parliament where a majority of one means almost absolute power (despite winning it based on fewer votes than your socialist predecessor), it is tempting to rule as if you have absolute power and all those under you will loyally

UK Politics

This evening's vote on the Welfare Bill is the Labour Party's equivalent of the LibDem's student loan moment.
There will be a lot of people - me included - who will find themselves unable to vote Labour again in a very long time. It's a seismic shift in UK Politics.
The effect of this may well be to gift the next election to the Reform company - with the opposition being a mish-mash of LibDems, Greens and whatever the Independents coalesce (and the rump of LINO).
It's a very sorry day.

Labour has just handed the next election to Reform UK.

Shamefully only 49 Labour MPs rebelled on the second reading of the Welfare Bill this evening.
700,000+ new claimants will lose universal credit health payments, £3,000 a year on average.
A two-tier welfare bill.
I am so sorry for future disabled claimants.

Here's the breakdown of votes so you can contact your MP. I've just written to mine.
