Hmmm. Gar nicht so einfach. Ziemlich typisch für meine Heimatregion, also das Gebiet Mittlere Elbe zwischen Magdeburg und Dessau, sind die Auenlandschaften. Ob Elbe, Mulde oder Ehle, wir haben ausgedehnte Überflutungsflächen, die zwar bei der jetzt eher typischen Trockenheit nicht oft zum Einsatz kommen, aber Städte wie Magdeburg schon öfter vor Hochwasser gerettet haben. Unser #Umflutkanal in Biederitz stand z. B. zuletzt im Winter 2023/2024 unter Wasser, als das Pretziener Wehr gezogen wurde. Ansonsten sagen sich hier Fuchs und Reh gute Nacht – oder auch Biber und #Storch. Das erste Storchenpaar ist letzte Woche nach Biederitz zurückgekehrt!

Hmmm. This is quite a tricky one. I'd say the #floodplains are very typical of my region, the Middle Elbe, which lies between the cities of Magdeburg and Dessau. Along rivers like the Elbe, Mulde, and Ehle, we have vast water meadows that occasionally flood to protect cities such as Magdeburg. While it has been rather dry in recent years, these floodplains still play a crucial role. This one in #Biederitz, for example, was last flooded in the winter of 2023/2024 to shield Magdeburg and other towns from Elbe flooding. Most of the time though, these #meadows offer abundant wildlife, including foxes, roe deer, beavers, and #storks. The first breeding pair of white storks returned to Biederitz just last week!

🇺🇸 The white stork (Ciconia ciconia) is a large, elegant wading bird found across Europe, North Africa, and parts of Asia. It measures between 100 and 115 centimeters in length, with a wingspan of up to 215 centimeters, and weighs around 3 to 4.5 kilograms. Easily recognized by its bright white plumage contrasted with black flight feathers, long red legs, and a pointed red bill, the white stork is a beloved symbol of luck and renewal. These birds often build massive stick nests on rooftops, chimneys, or trees — using and expanding them year after year. They feed mainly on insects, frogs, small mammals, and reptiles found in meadows and wetlands. Each autumn, white storks migrate thousands of kilometers to winter in sub-Saharan Africa, returning to Europe in spring to breed.

🇩🇪 Der Weißstorch (Ciconia ciconia) ist ein großer, eleganter Schreitvogel, der in Europa, Nordafrika und Teilen Asiens verbreitet ist. Er wird 100 bis 115 Zentimeter lang, erreicht eine Flügelspannweite von bis zu 215 Zentimetern und wiegt etwa 3 bis 4,5 Kilogramm. Typisch sind das schneeweiße Gefieder mit schwarzen Schwungfedern, die langen roten Beine und der spitze rote Schnabel. Der Weißstorch gilt vielerorts als Symbol für Glück und neues Leben. Er baut seine großen Nester aus Ästen auf Dächern, Kaminen oder Bäumen und nutzt sie oft über viele Jahre hinweg. Seine Nahrung besteht vor allem aus Insekten, Fröschen, kleinen Säugetieren und Reptilien, die er auf Wiesen und Feuchtgebieten findet. Im Herbst ziehen die Störche tausende Kilometer weit nach Afrika südlich der Sahara, um dort zu überwintern, bevor sie im Frühjahr zur Brut zurückkehren.
