Portals are an odd piece of Wikipedia, not without controversy. The now-failed guidelines page for writing portals has a few links for those curious on portal’s reputation among editors. Those who write them tend to appreciate them as part of a shrine page to their interest, but others find the cost-benefit to the number of people actually looking at them and the tedium endured keeping them up to date.
I for one, like them as capstones to a particularly established piece of the site. In fact they’re sort of exemplary of the kind of blog I want to write. Over time, I would love different pieces of my website to build up into established sections with category headings and recommendations.
